Anzac day fishing at the Abrolhos Islands

What a hectic week this one was! We had a group out on San Souci visiting and interacting with all things Abrolhos islands, while we also had a crew from all over WA out in Blue Lightning III. From what I’ve heard it was a barrel of laughs!

The rivalry begins

The crew kicked off Day 1 with a bit of healthy rivalry between the blokes from Kalgoorlie and the guys from Perth. Geoff was the first off the blocks with the first of three Spanish Mackerel to the boat. Rodney managed to nab himself the biggest of the 3 with Rick claiming the opposite end of the scale, the smallest.

Bottom fishing the Abrolhos Islands

The crew hit the bottom grounds with an array of soft plastics, hard jigs and bait rigs. Geoff had a great day landing himself a big Baldchin Groper. Not to be outdone, John hauled aboard a nice 8kg Dhufish thanks to an Abrolhos Tackle rig.

Pigeon Island stopover

The crew opted to stay at Pigeon Island for their first night. Heading up to the local watering hole to mingle with the locals and catch a bit of the atmosphere. Day one saw the Kalgoorlie crew in the lead, or so Geoff reckons anyway! ?

Anzac Day at the Abrolhos Islands

The guys awoke early on day 2, Anzac day with the whole crew keen to head up to the Dawn Service. If you have never had the privilege to attend an Anzac day service at the beautiful Abrolhos Islands, it really is something to behold. Although the sun rise was amazing, the weather wasn’t going to match it! With not ideal weather conditions the guys headed out for a troll, with not a lot of luck. That was until Geoff, reeled in the first fish of the day again, a huge 12kg Samson fish. Samson fish really put up a big fight, it was a fun battle for the crew to see.

Shallow water fishing fun

With the weather not getting any better, Captain Chad pulled up in the shallows. The guys had an awesome time stretching their arms and their luck with some awesome Baldchin Groper. These fish are a good fight, and even better fun in the shallows. After a day full of Baldchin fun, Captain Chad steamed them back towards the islands, with no luck on the troll.

Thanks Decky Sam

Not being on board this week, I left the notes up to Decky Sam. I’m assuming these guys were all having way too much fun catching fish and keeping decky Sam busy as this is where my notes end ? so guys if you have any more funny stories for the week, please email them through to me as I’d love to get this blog updated! And we are all dying to know who won the Kalgoorlie vs Perth bragging rights!

Enjoy the photos of the week ?

Until next time, happy fishing

Leah
