GT aplenty- Montebello Islands Week 16

GT aplenty- Montebello Islands Week 16

What a week to end the 2015 Montebello Islands season! This week’s group loves their Giant Trevally (GT), so our aim for the week was to chase the mighty GT. The predominant species for the week was without a doubt the GT (we estimate at least 30 GT caught and released this week), they were really hot on the bite. The boys also landed some nice size mackerel, 3 Sailfish, and a black marlin. On the jigs and soft plastics the Coral Trout and Rankin Cod were also on the bite.

We spent 1 full day in around the islands on Heart Starter chasing GT this week which is always a lot of fun. We also spent a good part of the week fishing for GT from Blue Lightning III. The group enjoyed some seriously hot sessions on the GT. The boys did some GT popping as well as using stick baits.

Captain Chad’s highlight of the week was when Blue Lightning III was surrounded by a school of more than 50 GT all in excess of 30kgs. It was every fishing skippers dream. 8 of the guys on board got a cast in but broke off, 4 had solid hooks and 1 manage to catch a GT. It was a pretty stellar effort with GT known for being easily spooked and very difficult to catch.

The boys were blessed with some great weather, with very little wind. Although I have to admit 35-40°C felt pretty hot for the poor guys from Melbourne.

Jason the organiser of this week’s charter has now been on 10 Blue Lightning Charters and we so look forward to having these guys back on board Blue Lightning.

Week 16 marked the end of another awesome season for Blue Lightning Charters up here at the Montebello Islands. The fleet and crew are now heading south for the summer to do single day charters out of Port Bouvard south of Perth.
